How to Get ICF Certified in APAC: A Step‑by‑Step Regional Guide 🌏

What sets exceptional coaches apart isn’t just their presence, skillset, or years of practice – it’s also the credibility that comes with globally recognized credentials. In the coaching profession, an International Coaching Federation (ICF) certification is respected internationally as a mark of excellence.

Explore our step-by-step regional guide to learn exactly how you can earn a prestigious ICF certification alongside other top coaches across the APAC region.

Why ICF certification matters in APAC

The coaching industry in APAC has seen explosive growth over the past decade. From Singapore to Australia and Tokyo to Jakarta, organizations are investing in executive and team coaching more than ever. In fact, the executive coaching and leadership development market in APAC is estimated to have totaled US $3.95 billion in 2024, with projections indicating it could reach US $6.94 billion by 2035. In this competitive environment, an ICF credential acts as your professional passport, signaling trust, credibility, and a commitment to global standards.

However, with this growth comes complexity as each country has its own corporate culture, language, and leadership expectations. That’s why choosing the right training pathway isn’t just important; it’s essential to your success as a coach in the region.

Which ICF pathway is right for you?

ICF offers three primary credentials, with progressively higher requirements for coaching education and experience:

  • Associate Certified Coach (ACC)
  • Professional Certified Coach (PCC)
  • Master Certified Coach (MCC)

In 2023, ICF also launched a new designation: Advanced Certification in Team Coaching (ACTC).

Let’s break down how you can approach becoming ICF certified in the APAC region – with real program examples that make the path clear.

Earning an ICF ACC credential

Becoming ICF ACC certified involves five key steps. Here’s what this looks like.

Step 1: Complete accredited training (60 hours)

To kickstart your ACC certification journey, you’ll need to complete 60 hours of coach education through an ICF-accredited program.

Programs like The Performance Coach (TPC) are designed to meet this requirement and will provide you with a certificate of completion upon finishing the course.

This ICF Level 1 accredited program is designed specifically for professionals ready to embed coaching into their leadership or consulting practice, as well as aspiring or relatively new coaches looking to earn their first ICF credential.

ICF Level 1 programs like TPC provide training focused on coaching fundamentals aligned with ICF Core Competencies, making it a good way to develop your foundational coaching skills.

Step 2: Mentor coaching (10 hours)

Mentor coaching is an essential step on the path to ACC certification. Over a minimum period of three months, you’ll complete 10 hours of mentor coaching from an ICF-credentialed coach to help you refine your craft.

In the case of TPC, these 10 hours of mentor coaching are included as part of our program.

Step 3: Undergo a performance evaluation

In this stage, you are required to submit an audio recording along with a written transcript of a full coaching session, lasting 20–60 minutes. A qualified assessor will then formally review your session to assess your coaching skills against ICF standards.

In the TPC program, this performance evaluation is carried out by a qualified member of our team. Upon completing this step and all other key requirements within the TPC program, you will be awarded a certificate of completion by Emerge Performance.

Taught by veteran ICF-certified coaches (minimum of ICF PCC) with deep regional experience, The Performance Coach (TPC) program gives you the required coaching education hours, mentor coaching, observed practice, and performance evaluation (Steps 1, 2, and 3) you need on your journey to becoming ICF ACC certified.

Step 4: Accumulate coaching experience (100 hours)

Building coaching experience is an important part of your certification journey. To apply for the ICF ACC credential, you must log a minimum of 100 hours of client coaching, excluding the coaching hours you may log as part of your coaching education (Step 1).

While logging these 100 hours is your responsibility, Emerge Performance can help! If you join our TPC program, we give you lifetime access to The Coaching Village (TCV) – our global coaching community – where you can log peer coaching hours to count toward your 100-hour requirement.

Step 5: Complete the ICF credentialing exam

Once you complete the first four steps, you apply directly to ICF for the ACC credentialing exam. This exam consists of 81 scenario-based questions to be completed within 3 hours. Pass it, and you’re officially ICF ACC certified!

Pursuing ICF ACTC certification

Interested in adding ICF’s Advanced Certification in Team Coaching (ACTC) to your coaching toolbox? Here are the five key steps you need to complete.

Step 1: Hold an active ICF credential

You’ll need to have a current ICF credential – whether it’s ACC, PCC, or MCC – to become ACTC certified.

If you’re not yet ICF credentialed, The Performance Coach (TPC) program is your ideal starting point. It fulfills the training requirements for earning your ICF ACC credential and sets the stage for your development as a team coach.

Step 2: Complete accredited training (60 hours)

Earning your ACTC certification requires completing at least 60 hours of coaching education through an ICF-accredited provider.

Programs like The Team Coach (TTC) meet this standard, with our expert faculty sharing their deep expertise and training on advanced team coaching skills and frameworks. Upon fulfilling all of the TTC program requirements, you will receive a certificate of completion to submit to ICF during Step 4 below.

Step 3: Coaching supervision (5 hours)

Coaching supervision is a powerful tool for professional growth as a coach. These sessions create a supportive space to explore challenges, gain fresh perspectives, and strengthen your coaching presence through guided discussion and peer learning.

To pursue ACTC certification, you need to take part in 5 group supervision sessions designed to help you reflect deeply on your team coaching experiences. These sessions are included as part of our TTC program.

Step 4: Logging 5 team coaching engagements

Practical experience is essential to develop your skills as a team coach, so you are required to complete at least 5 team coaching engagements within a 5-year period to apply for ACTC certification.

While you are responsible for securing your own team coaching engagements, we support you via the TTC program with templates, tools, and guidance to set you up for success. Through The Coaching Village (TCV), you can also explore peer connections and potential opportunities to secure team coaching engagements.

Step 5: Complete the ICF credentialing exam

Completed steps 1–4? Then you’re ready for the ICF Team Coaching Certification Exam!

As part of the TTC program, we provide support and preparation guidance to help you approach the ICF ACTC exam with confidence. The exam itself is conducted by ICF and is not included within the TTC program.
