Leading Teams
Leadership Performance Academy (LPA) ยท Team Leadership
Move from individual contribution to collective performance.
Leading Teams helps new and emerging people managers make one of the most important transitions in their careers: moving from delivering through their own expertise to enabling a team to perform.
Participants develop practical ways to create direction, build trust, coordinate work, navigate team dynamics and strengthen accountabilityโwhile continuing to deliver under real organisational pressure.
The transition to team leadership
Becoming responsible for a team changes the work.
Success as an individual contributor is often built on personal expertise, effort and execution. Team leadership requires a different contribution: creating the conditions in which other people can understand what matters, work effectively together and take meaningful ownership.
Letting go of being the expert
New managers can become the teamโs problem-solver, creating dependency and limiting the growth of others.
Balancing people and performance
Leaders must support different needs while maintaining clear standards, priorities and accountability.
Leading former peers
A change in role can alter relationships, expectations and boundariesโparticularly when someone is promoted from within the team.
Coordinating through complexity
Hybrid work, AI-enabled workflows and diverse expectations make alignment, communication and collaboration more demanding.
Team leadership capabilities
Lead the team as both participant and performance leader.
Leading Teams draws from Emerge Performanceโs Coaching High Performance Teams materials, contextualised for managers who lead their own teamsโnot external team coaches.
Create shared purpose and direction
Connect organisational priorities to a meaningful team purpose, clear goals and the contribution expected from each person.
Build trust and psychological safety
Create the conditions for people to contribute, learn, acknowledge mistakes and challenge ideas constructively.
Establish effective team agreements
Clarify roles, decision rights, behavioural expectations and practical ways of working together.
Read and respond to team dynamics
Notice patterns in communication, participation, influence, energy and decision-makingโand intervene before unhelpful patterns become embedded.
Enable dialogue, conflict and accountability
Help the team work through disagreement, make clear decisions and hold one another accountable for commitments and results.
Strengthen learning, resilience and adaptation
Use reflection, feedback and action learning to help the team respond to setbacks, changing expectations and new ways of working.
Develop the managerโs leadership range
The programme does not ask managers to become external team coaches or remain neutral. It helps them choose the response the team and situation require.
The development journey
Develop the leader while strengthening the team.
Leading Teams is not delivered as a collection of management techniques. Participants work with the realities of their own teams, applying what they learn between facilitated sessions.
Understand the team context
Clarify the leaderโs transition, the teamโs purpose, current stage and patterns helping or constraining performance.
Develop the leadership range
Build the capabilities to create direction, trust, effective agreements, productive dialogue, accountability and learning.
Lead differently in real work
Use current team situations to practise, experiment, receive feedback and strengthen everyday leadership judgment.
Embed effective practices
Turn new behaviours into team routines through reflection, feedback, peer learning, manager support and evidence.
Workplace application
Participants apply the learning to their own teams rather than relying only on hypothetical management cases.
- Clarify team purpose and priorities
- Refresh team agreements
- Redesign a team meeting
- Address an unresolved tension
- Improve participation and decisions
- Strengthen delegation and accountability
- Lead a team learning review
- Practise a difficult conversation
Evidence and organisational fit
Progress becomes visible in how the team works.
Outcomes are agreed at the start. We look for evidence in team conversations, decisions, routines and performanceโnot only participant satisfaction.
Clearer shared direction
People understand the teamโs purpose, priorities and how their contribution connects to collective outcomes.
Stronger trust and dialogue
Participation becomes more balanced, concerns surface earlier and challenge becomes more constructive.
Better coordination and accountability
Roles, interdependencies, decisions and commitments become clearer and easier to act on.
Greater learning and adaptation
The team reflects, learns from setbacks and becomes less dependent on the manager for every answer.
A connected leadership pathway
Standalone when needed. Stronger as part of a shared journey.
Leading Teams can respond to an immediate manager-transition need or extend a broader Leadership 3.0™ development journey.
Leadership 3.0™
Develop the broader judgment to balance people and task, present performance and future capability.
Leading Teams
Translate that foundation into shared direction, trust, team agreements, productive dynamics, accountability and adaptation.
For managers who lead teamsโnot external team coaches
Leading Teams helps managers apply systemic and team-coaching principles while remaining accountable for direction, decisions, people and performance. It is not professional team-coach training. Coaches and practitioners seeking professional systemic team-coaching development should explore The Team Coach, Emerge Performanceโs ICF AATC-accredited pathway.
Frequently asked questions
Questions organisational sponsors often ask.
Must participants complete Leadership 3.0™ first?
No. Leading Teams can be delivered as a standalone programme. Leadership 3.0™ is the recommended foundation when an organisation wants a broader shared leadership language.
Is this team-coach training?
No. The programme is designed for managers who lead their own teams. They remain part of the team system and accountable for direction, decisions, people and performance.
Does the whole team participate?
The core programme develops the manager. Depending on the organisational objective, selected diagnostics, team conversations or intact-team activities can be incorporated into the journey.
How is the programme tailored?
We begin with the leadership population, team context and organisational priorities. Practice situations, tools and workplace applications are then adapted to the participantsโ realities.
How long is the programme?
The format depends on the desired depth, participant population and workplace application required. We determine the most appropriate journey with the organisational sponsor.

What do your managers need to create through their teams?
Tell us about the leadership transition, team environment or organisational priority. We will help determine whether Leading Teams should stand alone or form part of a connected Leadership 3.0™ journey.
