We fear failure, so we choose not to make a big career move. We\nkeep thinking of the mistakes we\u2019ve made in the past, so we choose not to tackle the obstacles standing before us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">These negative thoughts can keep us locked up in a self-imposed prison: once we\u2019re caught in the loop, it can be difficult to break free. In this situation,\nwe often need a tool to help us pry open the bars to escape. One such tool is mindfulness.<\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>A mindful approach to negativity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In a Forbes article entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeenacho\/2016\/12\/27\/the-science-behind-how-mindfulness-helps-you-to-break-negative-thought-patterns\/2\/#281d65bb3f78\">The Science Behind How Mindfulness Can Help Break Negative Thought Patterns<\/a>\u201d,\nauthor Jeena Cho speaks with scientists and academics to learn about research into how mindfulness can impact our thought processes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The article\u2019s overarching message is that mindfulness can be a useful tool for helping us break free from a vicious cycle of negative thoughts. This can\nbe broken down into three broad steps:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Start with awareness.<\/strong> In the article, Cho notes that since mindfulness brings our thoughts firmly into the present moment, it can\nhelp us become aware of the pattern of negative thoughts running through our head. Why does this matter? As Cho writes, \u201cOnce we identify the patterns,\nwe know what to target\u201d.<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Take action quickly.<\/strong> Negative thoughts affect all of us differently. For some, they lead to anxiety; for others, anger or hopelessness.\nMindfulness can help us recognise the early warning signs (e.g. cold sweats or an elevated heartrate) and act quickly with proactive steps to counteract\nour body\u2019s response to these negative thoughts.<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Break up the cycle.<\/strong> Negative thought patterns tend to plague us with a never-ending cycle of \u201cwhat if\u201d scenarios\nand self-doubt. However, Cho explains in the article that the aim of mindfulness is not to avoid these negative thoughts entirely. However, we can choose to <a href=\"https:\/\/emergeperformance.net\/zh\/articles\/the-power-of-vulnerability\/\">embrace vulnerability<\/a> and accept the situation as it is.
