If you spend all your time working, sooner or later your mental and physical performance are going to suffer.<\/span>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As we touched on previously, rest and recovery play an important role in allowing leaders to <a style=\"font-size: 16px; background-color: white;\" href=\"https:\/\/emergeperformance.net\/zh\/articles\/how-rest-and-recovery-can-make-you-a-better-leader\/\">perform at their highest level<\/a> on a sustained basis. This can take many forms, from regular exercise\nand family holidays to short mental breathers or simply sitting on the couch watching TV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What you do to rest and recover is much less important than finding an approach that works for you and a way to integrate it into your routine. Here are\na few strategies that can help you make rest and recovery a regular feature in your busy life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong style=\"color: inherit; font-size: 18px;\">Make a plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\">High-flying executives typically have a never-ending to-do list, so if you don\u2019t plan for rest and recovery, there\u2019s a good chance it won\u2019t happen. In\nother words, you need to actively make time to unwind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">One way to do this is by applying <a style=\"font-size: 16px; background-color: white;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trainingpeaks.com\/blog\/macrocycles-mesocycles-and-microcycles-understanding-the-3-cycles-of-periodization\/\">periodization<\/a> \u2013 a training strategy used by athletes \u2013 to plan your time in blocks with different\nobjectives and levels of intensity. To use this approach, try dividing your day into 30- or 60-minute blocks. Depending on the nature of your role,\nyou might assign a few blocks in the morning for meetings and status updates with your team, a block or two for administrative duties, and so on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">With this approach, you can build protected time into your schedule for rest and recovery. For instance, you might block off 30 minutes of distraction-free\ntime (no taking calls, no checking emails!) in the early afternoon during which you go outside for a walk and gather your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Since your brain will likely be tackling work problems subconsciously in the background, this is not \u2018wasted\u2019 time. On the contrary, this time will\nlikely give you the energy boost and mental clarity you need to have a more productive afternoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong style=\"color: inherit; font-size: 18px;\">Involve the team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Just because you\u2019re in charge doesn\u2019t mean you have to do everything on your own. If you\u2019re struggling to incorporate rest and recovery into your life,\nget your team to help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For example, if you apply a periodization approach to your daily schedule, don\u2019t keep this to yourself. Instead, share this info with your team so\nthat they understand how your day is structured and can help you plan with this in mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If you have young children, you might make it a priority to be home in time for dinner with them on weeknights, after which you work another hour or\ntwo in your home office. This mealtime with your family is an important recovery period for you, and making your team aware of this will ensure\nthey don\u2019t disrupt it for anything short of an emergency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Rest-and-Recovery-Strategies-for-Busy-Leaders-bodyphoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 605px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 605\/403;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong style=\"color: inherit; font-size: 18px;\">Unplug<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: inherit; font-family: inherit;\">Smartphones and laptops are valuable tools when you\u2019re running an organisation and trying to keep up with many people and events, often across different geographies and time zones. But the endless notifications can also cause your <\/span> <a style=\"font-family: inherit; background-color: white;\" href=\"https:\/\/emergeperformance.net\/zh\/articles\/the-a-factor\/\">attentional intelligence<\/a> <span style=\"color: inherit; font-family: inherit;\"> to suffer and make it difficult to \u2018switch off\u2019 work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Giving up your smartphone or laptop probably isn\u2019t realistic, but what you can do is unplug. How and how long depends on your responsibilities and personal preference \u2013 the key is to give yourself a break so your body and mind can recharge.<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">What might this look like? It could mean ensuring your phone and computer are off (or at least on silent) during mealtimes. It could mean setting yourself a rule of no emails and messages after 9pm. Or it could mean committing to a day- or weekend-long <\/span><a style=\"background-color: white; font-size: 16px;\" href=\"https:\/\/emergeperformance.net\/zh\/articles\/digital-detox-disconnect-to-connect\/\">digital detox<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> once per month.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong style=\"color: inherit;\">Say &#8216;no&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">No one can do everything, and anyone who tries to do so is setting themselves up for failure. You know that rest and recovery are important, so from time to time you have to learn to say \u2018no\u2019.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That invitation to speak at a conference next month? Why not send a VP, or just politely decline? That partner meeting in New York? Why not suggest a video conference? That offer to sit on the board of a charity? Why not tell them you\u2019d be happy to consider taking on the position in a year or two?<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Sometimes, saying \u2018no\u2019 means turning down things that you really would like to do. But given the importance of rest and recovery, this is at times a necessary sacrifice.<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong style=\"color: inherit; font-size: 18px;\">Take a break to improve your leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As a leader, your team and organisation depend on you to lead by example. This means performing at the top of your game through good times and bad.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The strategies outlined above will keep you mentally and physically resilient by integrating rest and recovery into your busy routine.
