As a leader, your role is to inspire, empower and guide<\/span>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">people towards a goal. However, leadership isn\u2019t only about other people \u2013 it\u2019s also about you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In order to help your team thrive, you need to know yourself. To do that, you need to begin with a clear understanding of what self-awareness is and how\nit influences leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Defining self-awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A component of the broader concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/emergeperformance.net\/zh\/articles\/what-is-eq-and-how-to-use-it-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emotional intelligence<\/a> (EQ), self-awareness is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_G-f2YjuMcU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defined<\/a> as: \u201cthe ability to understand your effect\non others, play to your strengths, and admit your weaknesses\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Based on the findings of a <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/01\/what-self-awareness-really-is-and-how-to-cultivate-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">large-scale study<\/a>,\na team led by organizational psychologist and researcher Tasha Eurich divided the concept of self-awareness into two categories:<\/p>\n\n<ol>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Internal self-awareness<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> \u201chow clearly we see our own values, passions, aspirations, fit with our environment, reactions\n(including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses), and impact on others\u201d.<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>External self-awareness<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> \u201cunderstanding how other people view us, in terms of those same factors\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This distinction is particularly relevant and useful when discussing leadership. If a key part of your role is to guide and inspire others, it isn\u2019t enough\nto have a clear understanding of how you impact your team \u2013 it\u2019s also important that you understand how they view you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Avoiding self-awareness blind spots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Building on the definitions developed in its research, Dr Eurich\u2019s team developed a model comprised of four self-awareness archetypes found among leaders:<\/p>\n\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Low external self-awareness<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>High external self-awareness<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 10px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>High internal self-awareness<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Introspectors:<\/strong> They\u2019re clear on who they are but don\u2019t challenge their own views or search for blind spots by getting feedback\nfrom others. This can harm their relationships and limit their success.<\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Aware:<\/strong> They know who they are, what they want to accomplish, and seek out and value others\u2019 opinions. This is where leaders\nbegin to fully realize the true benefits of self-awareness.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Low internal self-awareness<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Seekers:<\/strong> They don\u2019t know who they are, what they stand for, or how their teams see them. If you take an objective look in the mirror, which one best describes you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Unless you fall into the Aware group, there is likely a blind spot in your self-awareness. For example, if you\u2019re an Introspector, you may tend to charge\nahead and push through your plans at work rather than trying to build support within your team. By failing to recognise how others view this behaviour,\nyou may miss opportunities to get everyone working together towards a common goal and instead end up with an unhappy team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Leading-with-Self-Awareness-bodyphoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 584px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 584\/388;\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Taking action to build self-awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Based on its research, Dr Eurich\u2019s team estimated that only <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/01\/what-self-awareness-really-is-and-how-to-cultivate-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10\u201315%<\/a> of people are self-aware. The good news is that self-awareness can be honed with practice, so even if you currently have blind spots, these can be\novercome. Here are a few strategies for boosting your self-awareness:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Ask for feedback and be open to it, even if (especially if!) you don\u2019t like the what you hear.<\/strong> When possible, do this both formally\nthrough planned team feedback sessions or surveys, informally through casual conversations with your team.<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Challenge your assumptions.<\/strong> Make an effort to identify underlying assumptions in your views, habits and plans. You don\u2019t necessarily\nhave to change them \u2013 making assumptions isn\u2019t inherently bad \u2013 but you should be aware of them.<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Make time for yourself outside of work.<\/strong> Taking a break and stepping back from work can help you better understand your values, passions\nand needs. This in turn can boost your self-awareness and ultimately make you a better leader.<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Work with a coach.<\/strong> Find someone outside your workplace who can provide objective feedback and constructive guidance. Self-awareness\ncan be learned and strengthened, and an experienced coach can guide you through this process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Becoming a more self-aware leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Leadership is first and foremost about people. However, to bring out the best in your team, you need to begin with a solid understanding of your own strengths,\nweaknesses and impact on others.
