Perhaps by asking what\u2019s wrong or offering a hug and some encouraging words. But what if it was you who was in tears, whether in sadness or frustration or despair? Would you be similarly supportive towards yourself? <\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In this article, we examine the concept of self-compassion and how to cultivate it.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Making sense of self-compassion<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Compassion is <a href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/topic\/compassion\/definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">defined<\/a> as \u201cthe feeling that arises when you are<br \/>confronted with another\u2019s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering\u201d. So what is self-compassion? It\u2019s simply taking this same thinking<br \/>and behaviour and directing it inward towards yourself.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Kristin Neff, a leading expert in self-compassion and co-creator of the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) programme, <a style=\"background-color: white;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=11U0h0DPu7k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breaks down self-compassion<\/a> into three main components:<\/p><ol><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Self-kindness.<\/strong> If you see a friend or family member suffering, your first impulse is likely to care for and comfort them. Self-compassion<br \/>requires you to behave similarly towards yourself. If you make a mistake or suffer a setback, it\u2019s important to see the pain this causes you and<br \/>respond to it with caring and support, not self-criticism.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Common humanity.<\/strong> One of the worst aspects of suffering through hardship is the idea that you are suffering alone. Self-compassion<br \/>recognises that while you may be facing a unique set of challenges, every human faces obstacles of some kind. It\u2019s important to acknowledge this<br \/>shared aspect of humanity and remind yourself that you are not alone.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Mindfulness.<\/strong> When faced with their own suffering, some people do their best to ignore it while others may blow it out of proportion.<br \/>Neither approach is helpful. To benefit from self-compassion, it\u2019s important to approach your suffering with mindfulness by observing without judgement<br \/>how it impacts your thoughts and feelings.<\/li><\/ol><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Together, these three components form the basis for directing compassion towards yourself. Here are three tips on how to direct<br \/>greater compassion towards yourself:<\/p><ol><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Engage in reflection.<\/span>\u00a0It\u2019s difficult to be compassionate towards yourself if you aren\u2019t aware that you need it. By making time to<br \/>regularly reflect on how you\u2019re feeling, you will be quicker to identify when you are suffering and more likely to show yourself kindness as you<br \/>work through the underlying reasons for this suffering.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Accept imperfection.<\/span>\u00a0Don\u2019t believe the curated version of reality you might see on social media \u2013 no one\u2019s life is perfect and obstacle-free.<br \/>When you\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emergeperformance.net\/zh\/articles\/growing-from-your-mistakes-it-pays-to-be-honest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accept imperfection<\/a>\u00a0and acknowledge that everyone (including you) makes mistakes, it will become easier to show yourself forgiveness and kindness when things don\u2019t<br \/>go according to plan.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Practice self-care.<\/span>\u00a0In order to engage in self-compassion, you need to accept that you are worthy and deserving of care. By looking<br \/>after yourself physically, mentally and spiritually (e.g. eating well, getting enough rest, incorporating leisure time in your schedule), you will<br \/>reinforce the idea that your well-being truly matters.<\/li><\/ol><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Self-compassion is all about recognising your own suffering and taking active steps to alleviate it. And as with other skills, self-compassion is something<br \/>that can developed through practice.
