However, even if you actively pursue learning opportunities, there<br \/>are obstacles that can impede your ability to absorb new ideas.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In this article, we highlight cognitive biases that can stand in the way of your efforts to learn and what you can do to avoid them as you strive to become<br \/>a better leader.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>How biases hinder learning<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Cognitive bias is the tendency to reach an irrational conclusion as a result of filtering external input through your existing views, preferences and experience.<br \/>In other words, your mind is putting its own spin on the information it receives.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">This kind of bias can pose a problem when you are learning. Here are a few examples of biases to be on<br \/>alert for when you are trying to learn:<\/p><ul><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Status quo bias<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a preference to stick to the existing way of doing things.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Functional fixedness<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 an inability to imagine objects or ideas functioning in a way other than how you have traditionally used them.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Confirmation bias<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a tendency to accept information that aligns with your existing point of view and reject information that counters<br \/>it.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Not-invented-here bias<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a tendency to reject ideas or ways of doing things that you perceive to come from elsewhere (e.g. a different<br \/>industry or culture).<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Bandwagon effect<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a tendency to align your behaviour with how others around you are thinking or behaving.<\/li><li style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Recency bias<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 a tendency to place more value on more recent ideas and less value on older ideas.<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">These biases are pervasive and unconscious, but that doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t be overcome. The best way to prevent them from hindering your learning is<br \/>to be aware of them and to watch for red flags.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For example, be on guard for thoughts like \u201cBut that\u2019s not the way we do it here\u201d and \u201cWhy should I listen to this teacher? They don\u2019t have my industry<br \/>knowledge and experience.\u201d These are warning signs that you\u2019re being swayed by functional fixedness and the not-invented-here bias.<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">The best leaders are learners<\/span><\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Your industry and the wider business environment are not static, and your leadership shouldn\u2019t be either.
